April 2020 Newsletter — Child Well-Being Research Network

Many Doris Duke fellows have shifted their work in response to COVID-19 to support the promotion of child well-being during these difficult times. This newsletter highlights a few examples of fellows’ contributions to the field. Additionally, the Doris Duke Fellowships is embarking on a partnership with Prevent Child Abuse America to further disseminate resources for parents, practitioners, and policymakers. Spotlight: Fellow Responses to COVID-19

Four fellows: Megan Feely, Cohort Three; Kerri Raissian, Cohort One; Will Schneider, Cohort Two; and Lindsey Bullinger, Cohort Six; published a Brief for APSAC on Practical Steps to Prevent Child Neglect in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Aditi Srivastav, Cohort Seven fellow and Director of Research at the Children’s Trust of South Carolina, published an op-ed in The Post and Courier about the role of resiliency during the COVID-19 crisis.

Meredith Matone, Cohort Four fellow and Scientific Director at PolicyLab, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, sent out this survey to document the needs of transition age youth during COVID-19. Meredith also published a blog post on protecting children and families that addresses several topics, including: Child Welfare, Maternal and Child Home Visiting, Grandparents as Caregivers, Food Security, and Children’s Health Insurance Coverage.

Catherine Kuhns, Cohort Seven fellow and Research Associate at the Urban Institute, recently released a conceptual model for stabilizing children’s lives. Other work by her colleagues at the Urban Institute focuses on what COVID-19 means for equity, health, housing, and more.

Brooks Keeshin, Cohort Two fellow and Clinical Researcher at the University of Utah Department of Pediatrics, hosted a webinar through APSAC on Child Abuse Prevention. It explored stress relief techniques for parents, internet safety practices for children, and coping tips.

Francesca Longo, Cohort Five fellow and Researcher at the Office of Child Care, ACF, HHS has developed guidance for states, territories, and tribes regarding flexibility when serving families and children and supporting child care providers during the pandemic.

Kate Stepleton, Cohort Six fellow and Senior Research Associate at MEF Associates, shared that her organization is hosting a free virtual workshop in response to COVID-19 that focuses on the increased risk of domestic violence and the unique challenges facing low-income populations. Emily Bosk, Cohort Two fellow and Assistant Professor at Rutgers University, and her colleague published an article in Pediatrics on vulnerable youth in the context of COVID-19.
